MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) — A large business in Meridian is the only one of its kind in the United States. GRASSBuilt uses cutting edge technology using American-made bamboo materials. It’s featured on County Road 11.
The GRASSBuilt Facility is located on Pioneer Road in Meridian’s Industrial Park.
What seemed impossible a few years ago to Sean Hemmings has become reality. The CEO of GRASSBuilt is building a new bamboo economy in the United States here in Meridian that is competing against China, which represents about 98 percent of the global market.
“Here at GRASSBuilt, we’ve overcome all of that and after many years of hard work and research and development, we now compete directly with that Chinese import and we manufacture all engineered bamboo materials right here in Meridian, Mississippi,” said Hemmings.
The GRASSBuilt facility in Meridian is designed to deliver the first structural bamboo materials ever to be produced in U.S. history, at dimensions up to 21 feet long. Some of the products are designed to meet the needs of cabinetry, paneling, extreme sports equipment and furniture.
“The sustainable community has gravitated to bamboo essentially making it their poster child, if you will, of the ideal fiber,” said Hemmings. “The unfortunate aspect though is it all comes from China.”
While the United States is the number one importer of all bamboo products, the folks at GRASSBuilt do it differently. Their philosophy is to source all bamboo products locally rather than importing from foreign countries. All of their products are 100 percent made in America.
“We’ve been able to accomplish here because of a lot of really good Mississippians, what a lot of high-minded, well-credentialed people haven’t been able to figure out in other places,” said Hemmings. “I think we should be proud of that.”
The GRASSBuilt Bamboo Industry in Meridian, offering an alternative to manufactured wood. Taking a bite out of the Chinese global market. American-made. Home grown. A first of its kind facility in the United States, and it’s right here in our own backyard.
